Background
£270m of funding was announced in the 2013 Autumn Statement to exploit quantum science, £50m of this will be invested over the next five years in industry-led collaborative projects to accelerate UK industrial capabilities, to sew the seeds of a £ billion UK industry in quantum technologies.
Initial funding will help to build a strong UK base in supporting technologies such as lasers, vacuum systems and fabrication, and will lead to initial commercialisation of world-class quantum science in the UK; creating novel devices and systems, with unparalleled performance based on quantum effects.
These disruptive technologies will develop new capability in sensors and imaging, clocks, cryptography and computing, leading to multi billion markets in many new sectors, for example:
- positioning and navigation for defence, space exploration, but also construction and robotics
- medical diagnostics
- mineral and oil exploration
- communications and data security
