Inovo Building, 121 George Street, Glasgow G1 1RD, 10:00-16:00
Please join us for a free, interactive continuing professional development (CPD) workshop supported and delivered by Silicon Labs and Arrow Electronics. This is the first in a planned series of seminars from the CENSIS Connected Devices Development Centre, aimed at experienced design engineers, keeping them up-to-date with the latest technical developments around connected devices and the Internet of Things.
Connected Devices Development Centre (CDDC)
The CDDC is a new facility within the CENSIS office in Glasgow designed to help small and medium sized companies overcome many of the challenges they face in product development and allow them to fast-track the development of IoT products and services.
In addition to a demonstration area and project development space, CDDC offers regular technology seminars with high profile vendors to provide advice and guidance on how best to use their products to generate greater business efficiencies.
CDDC CPD Workshop
Silicon Labs develops energy-friendly solutions for a smarter, more connected world; creating the silicon, software and tools to enable engineers to develop products that transform industries and improve lives. Arrow Electronics is a leading vendor of electronic components and computer products.
After a short introduction to the CENSIS CDDC, Silicon Labs and Arrow, the day will be split into three workshops delivered by a senior Silicon Labs engineer:
- Workshop 1: In this first hands-on practical session, you will create a simple weather station application using Silicon Labs, Zero Gecko, low power Cortex M0+ based MCU and a selection of optical and environmental sensors. This will introduce the development platform ‘Simplicity Studio’ and some of Silicon Labs’ development kits. Once created delegates will modify the demo to take advantage of the low power energy modes on the Zero Gecko.
- Workshop 2: The second practical session will look at data encryption and will involve creating an IoT node using the latest MCU (Pearl Gecko) which includes hardware Crypto acceleration and a rich set of peripherals. Silicon Labs will also demonstrate the on-chip DCDC modules and delegates will learn about and use the latest capacitive sensing technology. The workshop will touch of various aspects of the IoT sensor node including security, power management and human interface.
- Workshop 3: The last workshop of the day will be a detailed demonstration from Silicon Labs on wireless mesh networking. Silicon Labs will present its IoT solutions and introduce some wireless technologies that are designed for low power IoT connectivity. This will include the latest in Bluetooth Low Energy and Mesh radio technologies (Thread and Zigbee).
Hardware will be supplied for Workshops 1 and 2. At the end of the day, the development board provided by Silicon Labs and Arrow Electronics for the workshops will be yours to take away.
Target Audience & Prerequisites
The event is aimed at design engineers with a minimum of 1-2 years’ hardware design experience that includes embedded programming. Regrettably the workshop is not suitable for current undergraduates or graduates/students who do not hold the minimum level of hardware design experience.
Required Kit
Delegates will be asked to bring their own laptop to the workshop and in advance, should download the latest version of Silicon Labs Simplicity Studio software – the Windows (offline) version is recommended.
Register your Interest
Places for this event are strictly limited to just 12 delegates, and demand is likely to be high. Priority will be given to delegates with experience in industry. To register your interest please contact Stuart Simpson, CENSIS Senior Engineer, providing your name, contact details and brief outline of your industry experience to date.
