Put the kettle on and join CENSIS for a catch up over a virtual coffee and connect with other companies, researchers and stakeholders working in the same space.

Led by CENSIS Business Development Managers Rachael Wakefield and Stephen Milne, this coffee break will look at how IoT could be used to support the ’20 minute neighbourhood’.

The idea of the 20 minute neighbourhood – communities where daily needs such as food shopping, schools, work, and leisure can all be met within a short walk from a person’s home – has been around for a while. The concept has been talked about as a catalyst for tackling everything from climate change to building better community engagement. Support for them has grown as Covid lockdowns shone a spotlight on the importance of ‘liveability’ in urban and rural spaces. The Scottish Government has promoted the idea, and the City of Edinburgh recently published a 10-year plan to deliver a better connected capital, partly by championing the concept.

How might IoT be used to support 20 minute neighbourhoods to create more liveable, better connected spaces? Could the reverse be true – could hyper-connected centralised IoT networks focus more on emotionless data-driven decisions rather than supporting change at a local level?

Our discussion could touch on so many subjects – from housing and transport, to environmental monitoring, traffic management, or post-Covid flexible work spaces. There are also challenges around more remote and rural communities where amenities will be less concentrated compared with a city. Could 20 minute neighbourhoods work in these less densely populated spaces?
